Thanksgiving Travel on I-5 in Northern California: Timing, Weather and Food Stops

Thanksgiving Travel on I-5 in Northern California: Timing, Weather and Food Stops

Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest times of the year on I-5. Families head north to Oregon and Washington, or south to the Bay Area and Sacramento, and the mountain stretch through Siskiyou County is right in the middle. Here is how to make the drive easier.

Pick your departure time

  • Tuesday or early Wednesday morning is usually better than Wednesday afternoon, the busiest travel window of the week.
  • Thanksgiving morning can be surprisingly quiet if you only have a few hours to drive.
  • Sunday afternoon is the heaviest return day. Leaving Saturday or Monday helps.

Watch the weather

Late November is when the first big storms often reach the mountains around Mount Shasta. Check Caltrans QuickMap before you leave, or call 1-800-427-7623 for California highway conditions, and carry chains that fit your tires. Rain in Redding can mean snow near Mount Shasta, so check the valley and the mountains separately. Our winter driving guide for I-5 covers chain controls and what to pack.

Plan real meals

Fast food at every exit makes a long day feel longer. Plan one sit-down stop where everyone can get out, stretch and eat something good. Dunsmuir sits right on the highway, a natural break between Sacramento or the Bay Area and southern Oregon.

Make the stop count

  • Take a 30-minute walk to Hedge Creek Falls before you eat. The trailhead is at the north end of town near I-5 Exit 732, with free parking and no entrance fee.
  • Fill water bottles with Dunsmuir's famous spring-fed tap water.
  • Fuel up in town so you are not hunting for a station near the summit.

Yaks is a counter-service stop at 4917 Dunsmuir Ave, just off the highway, so you can order at the counter and be back on the road or sit down for a real break. If you want the hike details, see our Hedge Creek Falls trail guide.

Our holiday hours

We are open 11:30 AM to 8 PM daily, but holiday hours are not always posted in advance and can change. Call (530) 678-3517 or check our Google listing before you count on us for Thanksgiving Day itself. Our holiday menu items page shows seasonal favorites.

Kids and pets

Bring games and headphones for kids, and plan a stop where they can move around. If you are traveling with a dog, see our guide to dog-friendly roadside stops on I-5.

Leftovers on the road

If you carry leftovers home, keep them in a cooler with ice. Do not leave food in a warm car.

Fueling the driver

The driver needs real food and real breaks. Heavy meals right before a long stretch can make you sleepy, while skipping meals makes you tired and irritable. Plan a balanced meal stop, drink water and switch drivers if you can. If you feel drowsy, pull over somewhere safe. A stop in Dunsmuir gives you a full meal, a chance to stretch and a look at road conditions ahead. Browse our menu before you go so you can order quickly.

Above all, be patient. Holiday roads are busy, and everyone wants to get home. Leave extra room, expect delays and remember that arriving safely matters more than arriving early. A relaxed meal break can reset the mood for the whole car.
