How Ordering Works at Yaks on the 5: What to Expect on Your First Visit

How Ordering Works at Yaks on the 5: What to Expect on Your First Visit

Every week we meet people who have driven past Dunsmuir for years and finally stopped. Many of them ask the same questions at the counter: how does this work, how long will it take and where do we sit? Here is the honest answer so your first visit goes smoothly.

You order at the counter

Yaks is a counter-service restaurant. You step up, order and pay at the counter, then find a seat. There is no host stand and no server taking orders at the table. Doing it this way lets us spend our time on what matters most: cooking every burger to order from scratch.

Expect a line at busy times

The line can stretch out the door on summer weekends, holiday weekends and around lunch. A few tips:

  • Come early or late. Right at 11:30 AM or after the lunch rush is usually quieter.
  • Decide before you reach the front. Look at the menu on your phone while you wait. If you cannot pick, our guide on which burger is right for you helps.
  • Send one person to order while the rest of the group grabs a table.

Once your order is in, the kitchen moves fast. Many guests are surprised how quickly the food comes out after a long line.

Finding a seat

Seating is first come, first served. In summer there is outdoor seating out back; in winter we seat indoors. Big groups should come outside peak hours if they want to sit together.

Portions are big

Our burgers are tall and the sides are generous. Plenty of couples split a burger and a side, and lots of people take half home. If you are back on the road, ask for a to-go box.

Ordering to go

If you are short on time, order at the counter and ask for it to go. It is a good option for drivers who want to eat at the next rest stop.

Kids and families

We have a kids menu with smaller burgers, and the room is full of things to look at while you wait. Ask at the counter if you have questions about a dish.

Phone and online orders for pickup are accepted when available. Call (530) 678-3517 or use the ordering channels listed on yaks.com if you want food ready after a hike or a highway stop.

Tips for groups

If you are with a big group, decide what everyone wants before you get to the counter. It keeps the line moving and gets your food out sooner. Find a table for the group while one or two people order.

Dietary questions

If you have allergies or dietary needs, tell the person at the counter when you order. They can tell you what goes into a dish.

Do not skip dessert

Ask at the counter about current favorites.
