First Time in Dunsmuir CA? Here’s What Locals Want You to Know

Dunsmuir CA: More Than Just a Spot on the Map

A lot of people drive past Dunsmuir CA without stopping. They see the exit on I-5 somewhere between Redding and the Oregon border and keep going. That is a mistake. Dunsmuir is a small mountain town with a character that is genuinely hard to find anymore. Here is what you should know before your first visit.

Where Is Dunsmuir?

Dunsmuir sits in Siskiyou County in Northern California, about 300 miles north of San Francisco and 55 miles south of the Oregon border. The town follows the Sacramento River Canyon through a narrow valley, with I-5 running alongside it. The elevation is around 2,300 feet, which means it is cooler than the Central Valley in summer and cold in winter. Mount Shasta is visible from town on clear days, rising to the northeast like it owns the whole valley.

The population is small, somewhere around 1,600 people. The main street, Dunsmuir Avenue, is only a few blocks long. Do not let the size fool you. What the town lacks in square footage it more than makes up for in personality.

The Sacramento River

The Upper Sacramento River is the heart of Dunsmuir. The river runs cold and clear through the canyon, and it is one of the most respected fly fishing destinations in the state. Even if you are not a fisherman, the river trail that winds along its banks is worth walking. The canyon is shaded, green, and surprisingly lush, especially in spring and early summer when snowmelt is running strong.

There are several public access points to the river from downtown. Look for the trail near the City Park and follow the river in either direction. You will hear the water before you see it.

Hedge Creek Falls

One of the most underrated short hikes in Northern California is just outside Dunsmuir at Hedge Creek Falls. The trailhead is off the Dunsmuir Avenue exit north of town, and the round trip is under a mile. The falls drop into a basalt grotto framed by ferns and moss, and the whole thing feels like a scene from a nature documentary. Bring a jacket even in summer. That grotto stays cool.

Castle Crags State Park

Six miles south of town, Castle Crags State Park is worth at least a half day. The granite spires that give the park its name rise dramatically above the tree line, and the trails here range from easy riverside walks to serious alpine climbs. The Vista Point Trail offers some of the best views of the crags with relatively modest effort. If you are planning a longer stay in the area, the park campground is one of the better options in Siskiyou County.

The Railroad History

Dunsmuir was a railroad town. The Southern Pacific Railroad made Dunsmuir a major stop and maintenance facility in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the railroad history is woven into the town’s identity. The Dunsmuir City Park features a restored steam locomotive, and the old railroad district along the canyon adds to the character of the downtown area. It is a slice of California history that most visitors do not know about until they are standing in the middle of it.

When to Visit

Dunsmuir is worth visiting any time of year, but the sweet spots are late spring through early fall. Summer days are warm but not brutal at this elevation, and the evenings cool down reliably. The river is at its best through summer. Fall brings stunning color to the canyon, and the fishing is excellent in October. Winter gets cold and the town quiets down, but the scenery is dramatic and the pace is even more relaxed than usual.
