• Fall (October and November): Many local guides consider fall the best-kept secret on the Upper Sacramento. Crowds thin, the canyon walls turn gold, and fish feed aggressively ahead of winter. October is one of the most scenic months to visit.
• Winter (December to February): The river stays open year-round. Midday midge hatches draw fish to the surface even in cold weather. Flows are low and the canyon is beautifully quiet.

Gear and Tactics That Work on the Upper Sacramento

A 9-foot, 4 or 5-weight rod is ideal for most sections. The river runs fast in many spots, so weighted nymphs and strike indicators produce consistent results when dry fly action is slow. During hatch periods, switching to dry flies can deliver some of the most memorable fishing in California.

Local fly patterns that consistently produce here include elk hair caddis, purple perils, and small midge patterns. The wild fish can be selective, so having a range of sizes pays off.

Wading carefully is essential. The river moves fast, the cobble bottom is slippery, and the canyon drops quickly. Felt soles or studded rubber wading boots are recommended. A wading staff is a smart addition for anyone new to moving water.

Access Points and Where to Start

The Upper Sacramento is a public river with relatively easy access through most of its canyon stretch. There are numerous pullouts along the highway between Dunsmuir and the lake above. Popular access includes the runs directly below town, the pools near the old Mossbrae area, and the canyon stretches accessible via the river trail.
